Chicken Tax – Infographic
Why is it that Americans can't name any foreign trucks? American trucks rule the road—and the reason is chicken. In the late fifties and early sixties the European economy was finally getting better, it was the era of free trade. Americans were going crazy for Beetles and Germans were going crazy for American chicken. So, why did Lyndon Johnson sign a 25% tariff on foreign trucks known as the chicken tax? How can a trade dispute changethe entire world and continue to affect global industry more than half a century later?
The success of a story is dependent not only on its content, but perhaps equally, if not more importantly, on it's telling. The objective of this project is to analyze and diagram the chicken tax story, using NPR's Planet Money episode 632 called "The Chicken Tax" as a starting point. The goal is to develop an awareness and appreciation of how a narrative can be made more engaging, persuasive, and dynamic by giving it graphic form.
